Banana plantation beside a country road under a bright sky

Sustainability is a farming practice before it is a marketing word.

For farmरस, sustainability means making better practical decisions about soil, water, biodiversity, animal management, crop protection, waste and livelihoods, and measuring whether those decisions are actually improving the system.

Soil

Build organic matter, compost responsibly, use crop residues where suitable and make nutrient decisions around crop need rather than habit.

Water

Match irrigation with drainage. Reduce avoidable water use and protect crops from prolonged waterlogging.

Biodiversity

Use mixed planting, flowering strips, trees, bees and seasonal crops to create more ecological variety than a single-crop system.

Pollinators

Plan forage across seasons and adopt crop-protection practices that reduce avoidable risk to bees.

Poultry

Balance outdoor access with biosecurity, health management, stocking discipline and soil protection.

Waste

Use suitable farm residues and properly composted manure where safe, and reduce avoidable post-harvest loss.

Livelihoods

Create value not only through crops but also through beekeeping, poultry, nurseries, aggregation, food processing and rural services.

What we intend to track

Progress over perfection. We will describe what we do, measure what we can and avoid making certification or environmental claims that we cannot substantiate.

  • Soil-health indicators
  • Water-management practices
  • Compost and organic-matter use
  • Flowering/forage calendar
  • Bee-colony health and honey yield
  • Poultry mortality and flock records
  • Crop yield and rejection
  • Food loss and farm waste
  • Farmer participation and income where applicable
  • Women-led livelihood participation
